Classification:

Mechanism of Action:

  • Activated charcoal is used in the emergency treatment of certain kinds of poisoning. It helps prevent the poison from being absorbed from the stomach into the systemic circulation.  The charcoal and the absorbed substances are then eliminated in the feces.

Indications:

  • Poisoning by ingestion, medication overdose

Contraindications:

  • Ingestion of caustics, corrosives and petroleum distillates and alkalis

Precautions:

  • Decreased LOC (ensure airway patency)

Adverse Effects:

  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Aspiration
  • Diarrhea
  • Black stools

Dose:

  • 0.5 – 1.0 g/kg PO
