  • Binds bile acids in the small intestines to form an insoluble complex to be excreted in feces

Mechanism of Action: 
  • Inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway; increases the clearance of LDL from the plasma

  • Rosuvastatin (Crestor)
  • Lovastatin (Mevacor)
  • Simvastatin (Zocor)

Mechanism of Action: 
  • Decreasing lipoprotein and triglyceride synthesis
Medications:
  • Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
  • Clofibrate (Atromid-S)
