Name:
  • Codeine

Classification:

  • Analgesic

Mechanism of Action:

  • A prodrug of morphine
  • Conversion of codeine to morphine occurs in the liver
  • Metabolism effects conversion
    • Extensive metabolizer may have adverse effects from a rapid buildup of codeine metabolites
    • Poor metabolizer may get little or no pain relief

Indications:

  • Mild to moderate pain relief

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity

Adverse Effects:

  • Drowsiness and constipation
  • Less common are itching, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, depression, and, paradoxically, coughing
  • As with all opiates, longer-term effects can vary but can include diminished libido, apathy and memory loss
