Mechanism of Action:
|
- A prodrug of morphine
- Conversion of codeine to morphine occurs in the liver
- Metabolism effects conversion
- Extensive metabolizer may have adverse effects from a rapid buildup of codeine metabolites
- Poor metabolizer may get little or no pain relief
|
|
Indications:
|
- Mild to moderate pain relief
|
|
Contraindications:
|
|
|
Adverse Effects:
|
- Drowsiness and constipation
- Less common are itching, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention, depression, and, paradoxically, coughing
- As with all opiates, longer-term effects can vary but can include diminished libido, apathy and memory loss
