Mechanism of Action:

  • A prodrug of phenytoin
  • Converts to phenytoin after parenteral administration
  • Can be given by intramuscular injection when IV access is unavailable
  • Effective anticonvulsant
  • Suppresses seizure activity in the brain

Indications:

  • Major motor seizures
  • Has an unlabeled use as an anti-dysrhythmic, particularly for digitalis-induced dysrhythmias

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity
