Mechanism of Action:

- Blocks post synaptic dopamine receptors in the brain
|

Indications:

- Treatment/management of acute/chronic psychosis, aggressive or agitated behavior
|
|
Contraindications:
|
- Parkinson’s
- CNS depression, coma
- Underlying correctable causes
- Previous history Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
|
|
Precautions:
|
- May impair mental and physical abilities
- Use with caution in patients taking anticoagulants
- Diphenhydramine should be available
|
|
Adverse Effects:
|
- Extra pyramidal reactions treat with Benadryl 25 – 50 mg IV/IM
- Lowers seizure threshold
- Blurred Vision
- Dry mouth
- Urinary retention
- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Precipitation of angina
- Rarely: neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- High fever, muscle rigidity
- Possible confusion, muteness
- May see profuse sweating, drooling
- Risk of cardiac and or respiratory arrest, seizures, renal failure
- Prolonged QT interval
