Mechanism of Action:

  • Inhibits many of the substances that cause inflammation (cytokines, interleukin, interferon)
  • Inhibits the synthesis of pro-inflammatory enzymes
  • Considered a short-acting steroid

Indications:

  • Severe anaphylaxis
  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Urticaria

Contraindications:

  • Untreated serious infections
  • Hypersensitivity

Dose:

  • 40 to 500 mg IV (rare to see prehospital, dose usually ordered by physician)
