Mechanism of Action:

  • Stimulates carbohydrate metabolism
  • Transports glucose into cells
  • Promotes transport of K+ into cells with glucose

Indications:

  • DKA
  • HHNK
  • Hyperkalemia

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Hypokalemia

Adverse Effects:

  • Hypoglycemia, itching, swelling, redness, allergic reactions may occur following administration of animal-derived insulin

Dose:

  • 5-10 units of regular insulin IV, followed by infusion at 0.1 unit/kg/h
  • 5-20 units of regular insulin SC/IM if there is not an immediate need for IV insulin
