Classification:

  • Corticosteroid

Mechanism of Action:

  • Decreases inflammation by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes
  • Suppresses pituitary release of corticotrophin, preventing adrenal corticosteroid release inhibiting immune response
  • Immediate-acting synthetic steroid

Indications:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Asthma/bronchospasm
  • Exacerbation of COPD

Contraindications:

  • Systemic infections
  • Septic shock

Precautions:

  • A single dose is all that should be given
  • Long term steroid therapy can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, prolonged wound healing, and suppression of adrenocortical steroids

Adverse Effects:

  • Fluid retention
  • CHF
  • HTN
  • ABDO distention
  • Vertigo
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Malaise
  • Hiccups

Dose:

  • 80 to 125 mg IV/IM
