Classification:

  • Proton pump inhibitor

Mechanism of Action:

  • Binds irreversibly to H+K+ATPase (proton pumps) and suppresses the secretion of acid
  • Since it binds irreversibly to the pumps, new pumps have to be made before acid production could be resumed

Indications:

  • Treatment of conditions where a rapid reduction of gastric acid secretion is such as reflux esophagitis in patients who cannot tolerate oral medications or in patients with severe GI bleeding
