Mechanism of Action:

  • Increases the action of the inhibitory neurotransmitter of GABA in the brain
  • Appears to inhibit the release of glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter) from nerve endings
  • Effective anticonvulsant of relatively low toxicity
  • Depresses the sensory cortex, decreases motor activity, alters cerebellar function, and causes drowsiness, sedation, and hypnosis

Indications:

  • Major motor seizures
  • Status epilepticus
  • Acute anxiety states
