Mechanism of Action:

- Increases the action of the inhibitory neurotransmitter of GABA in the brain
- Appears to inhibit the release of glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter) from nerve endings
- Effective anticonvulsant of relatively low toxicity
- Depresses the sensory cortex, decreases motor activity, alters cerebellar function, and causes drowsiness, sedation, and hypnosis
