Classification:

  • Beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent

Mechanism of Action:

  • Inhibits GABA activity in the brain

Indications:

  • Induction and maintenance of sedation

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity (including egg and soybean allergies)

Precautions:

  • Monitor EKG, BP, pulse oximetry
  • Use cautiously in elderly as clearance time may be increased and potentially cause severe hypotension

Adverse Effects:

  • Pain on induction
  • Hypotension
  • Apnea
  • Headache
  • Nausea and Vomiting

Dose:

 

Adult:

  • 25 – 75 mcg/kg IV as needed

Pediatric:

  • 1.0 mg/kg IV
